Expert Experience
How do you become an expert at something? One of the distinguishing characteristics between expert and novice is that an expert has seen many different examples and is able to categorize examples so that she may use similar problems to solve new ones.
In all of these examples, students can be exposed to a large number of examples and be asked to organize them by different salient features. While experts often gain this experience one problem at a time, this is a way that novices can be exposed to a large number of problems so that they may also see categorizations, similarities and begin to view problems through an "expert" eye.

Interactions without Arithmetic
Interacting with Algebra curriculum without arithmetic allows for students to focus their attention on other aspects of a problem. These sorting and matching activities allow students to engage in meaningful conversations about the algebra and not the arithmetic.
